“St John’s give such great care here and they make every daily interaction mean something by genuinely listening to me and my family. This is a place where the patient’s voice is really heard."
Martin came to St John’s for pain control and symptom management. Martin was receiving support in his own home from his St John’s Hospice Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nick.
"I have inoperable cancer. I want to feel comfortable, not be in pain and have the best quality of life I can for my remaining time I needed extra support so under Nick’s advice I came to the Hospice for a stay. I hadn’t realised that you could go to St John’s and then go home again.
Before I came here I couldn’t eat ‘real food’, the weight was falling of me. It’s hard to describe how worrying that was for everyone – I love my food! Now my pain from the cancer is properly managed, I can eat real food again and I’m actually comfortable.
St John’s came to the house once and stayed with me for a day respite visit so my wife and daughter could rest without worry – these things make such a difference.
I’m ready to go home now and I know that when I’m there; Nick and the St John’s team will still be there for me and the family.
It’s been a real eye-opener seeing just how much this small local charity does without the resources of a national one. If you can support this Hospice please do, and know that I can’t thank you and St John’s enough.”
Giving Tuesday is a day of global giving, encouraging people to do good. At a time of year when we’re focused on purchasing and bargain hunting, the Giving Tuesday campaign aims to inspire millions to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity for good causes.
Throughout Christmas, our care continues in your community, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Can you help us fund this vital care over the festive period?
Did you know that St John’s Hospice needs to raise almost £5 million a year to provide our services for free, 365 days a year. We only receive around 25% of our funding from the local NHS - the remaining 75% comes from the generosity of supporters like you!
