Veterans & Armed Forces Community

Veterans Aware Status

St John’s Hospice is proud to be a ‘Veteran Aware’ organisation. Our accreditation involves sharing good practice and linking with local services for the Armed Forces community and raising staff awareness of the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Veteran Aware accreditation is in recognition of our commitment to improving care for the armed forces community which includes regular and reservist personnel, veterans, spouses and families.

What does it mean to be Veteran Aware?

It means St John’s has made a pledge to the Armed Forces Covenant. This is a promise from the nation to ensure that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. It has two key principles which recognise the unique obligations and of and sacrifices made by the Armed Forces.

We are also pleased to regularly welcome members of the Armed Forces when they visit St John’s such as the Bay Veterans Group who are familiar with our work caring for patients who have served.

Members of our team are also St John’s Hospice Armed Forces Champions.

Armed Forces Covenant

St John's Hospice holds a Bronze Award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for our work supporting the armed forces community in considing St John’s Hospice as an employer.

All our job vacancies are posted on the national Families Forces Jobs Page.

Armed Forces Community Service Users

Are you a member of the Armed Forces community?

If you use any of our hospice services, please let a member of staff know if you are a:

  • Veteran
  • Serving person
  • Family member of someone serving in the Armed Forces

As a Veteran Aware hospice letting a member of staff know if you or your spouse/partner currently serve, or have served, in the UK Armed Forces helps us give you the best support for your care needs.

Veterans Working Group

St John’s Hospice has a Working Group that meets regularly to discuss how we can continue to support the specific needs of Armed Forces and Veteran patients and families, who we care for. Many staff from across the Hospice have undertaken specific training to better support armed forces personnel and veterans.
