Specialists in palliative care

About St John’s

What we do and who we are

St John’s Hospice is a local charity which provides free palliative care to patients with life shortening conditions. Our services cover a population area of 250,000 people in North Lancashire, South Lakes and parts of North Yorkshire. We have been caring for our community every minute of every day since 1986.
St John’s Hospice has been part of the local community for over 35 years and provides vital service to patients and families all over our community. Our aim is to ensure that on the journey towards the end of life, we provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Our services focus on improving patients' symptoms, and end of life care. The hospice’s experienced team of specialists work together with our patients to make sure they are getting the care and support they need to live their life their way, as much as possible.

At St John's Hospice, we are proud that our service provides a caring, inclusive environment. Our community of patients, carers, supporters, and their families are treated equally, as individuals, with respect, dignity, compassion and empathy. Everyone can be confident they will receive the same high standards of care, whoever they may be.
We provide care in the hospice on the inpatient ward and also through therapies, social work and bereavement support. St John’s also provides care, compassion and support in people’s homes with Hospice at Home, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Therapists and Palliative Respite teams.

Whether St John’s is caring for you in your home or on the inpatient ward you will receive a holistic approach to care – this means we look at the whole person to consider their physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.

Our care will always be free to those who need it, but it isn’t cost free. It costs nearly £400 per hour to run the hospice with only around a third of this amount provided by local NHS funding. The remaining two thirds must be raised through events, community donations, grants and legacies.
