A brand new café will open to the public at St John’s Hospice on Monday 11th September, with all proceeds going directly back to the hospice.
The Courtyard Café, located at the hospice on Slyne Road in Lancaster, will serve freshly prepared hot and cold food from a diverse menu, including daily specials. Teas, coffees and homemade cakes baked on site will also be available.
The café, which seats up to 60 people inside and an additional 20 outside in the beautiful courtyard, has been in the planning for a long time, and St John’s Hospice Chief Executive, Sue McGraw, can’t wait to see it open, “We are so pleased that we are on the final countdown to our beautiful café opening. Our little hospice has been central to our community for 30 years and we want The Courtyard to be a place for them to come and meet friends, have a coffee and some cake, enjoy some delicious food and help support the hospice. Every penny that we make will go straight back towards helping local people and their loved ones. I have been lucky enough to sample some of the cakes too, so I know people won’t be disappointed!”
The Courtyard will be officially opened at 12 noon on Monday 11th September by Robert Webb JP DL, High Sheriff of Lancashire. Hospice supporters and members of the public are encouraged to come down and sample the tasty food and drink on offer.
The café will be mainly run by volunteers, from the vegetable garden at St John’s, which will be providing much of the fruit and vegetables being served, to the Café Assistants serving customers and being the friendly faces of The Courtyard. Volunteer Co-ordinator, Nicky Willan, says the café still needs some new volunteers, “our hospice wouldn’t survive without our dedicated volunteers, and The Courtyard Café will be no different. We have already had a lot of interest from people wanting to volunteer in the café, but we still need more.”
There will be two recruitment afternoons for budding café volunteers at St John’s Hospice on Thursday 10th & 17th August from 2pm to 3pm, for people to come and find out more about volunteering. Refreshments will be on offer too. No need to book, just come along, although you can call Nicky Willan on 01524 382538 if you have any questions.
