Do you currently work with children and young people and are looking for a volunteering opportunity where you can be part of a brand new bereavement service in your local community? If so, we’d really like to hear from you.
The Forget Me Not Centre will welcome families, adults, children and young people to provide bereavement support in a brand new, purpose-built environment. We want to keep families together to support one another in their grief, and work together to understand each others’ experiences, as well as support each other.
To support this amazing new facility, we are looking for Volunteers to support organised sessions and drop ins for children, young people and their families.
Role Title: Session Facilitator (Forget Me Not Centre)
Responsible to: Engagement Officer
Location: Forget Me Not Centre, St John’s Hospice
Purpose of Role: Making children, young people and families welcome at the Forget Me Not Centre and supporting organised sessions and drop ins
Role Shift times and days: Various – Day time, weekends or early evenings
DBS Requirement: Enhanced with Barred (this is a free service for volunteers)
What will I be doing?
💚 Help families to feel safe & listened to by interacting positively and with interest.
💚 Ensure that family confidentiality is maintained at all times.
💚 Support indoor and outdoor activities under the guidance of the FMNC Officer and in accordance with risk assessments.
💚 Prepare well-resourced spaces for creative sessions, clearing away afterwards to maintain a safe and clean environment.
💚 Support the Engagement Officer in managing the activity, assisting in activities, and supporting those attending, encouraging their involvement.
💚 Support the Engagement Officer to manage behaviour within the ethos of the Forget Me Not Centre.
💚 Looking after children who are upset or become unwell-supporting them, contacting their parents, finding a private space for them if is safe to do so.
💚 Report any safeguarding concerns to the Engagement Officer (Designated Safeguarding Lead).
💚 Attend regular face to face 1:1 with the Engagement Officer.
💚 Attend regular supervision with Family Support Team Coordinator.
💚 Follow all risk assessments for the Forget Me Not Centre and any activities.
💚 Assist with the display of work created by children, young people and families.
💚 Assist with the planning of activities
💚 Report any concerns or observations to the Engagement Officer.
What skills and qualities are required?
💚 Relevant qualification*
💚 Experience in working with C/YP & Families
💚 Good listening and interpersonal skills
💚 Ability to interact with children
💚 Ability to work as part of a team and develop good working relationships with staff and volunteers alike.
💚 Ability to behave with discretion at all times and to maintain strict confidentiality
💚 Awareness of boundaries regarding physical contact
💚 Aware of limitations of practice
* Counsellor, Social worker, Nurse, Doctor, Psychologist, Youth Worker, Nursery Worker, Teaching Assistant or Playworker
What will be some of my responsibilities?
💚 Complete all essential training sessions appropriate to your role, as required including Safeguarding Adults and Children Level 2.
💚 Ensure all Health & Safety rules are adhered to
💚 Arrive for your role on time
💚 If you are unable to work a shift, record in the Rota file and inform the Engagement Officer
💚 Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the Forget Me Not Centre ensuring a calm, unhurried atmosphere prevails within the FMNC to ensure relatives and other visitors feel welcome, relaxed and secure.
💚 Be aware of and support difference and ensure all children, young people & families have equal access to opportunities
What training will be provided?
💚 All volunteers must complete Volunteer Induction before starting their role
💚 Bi-annual Essential Training booklet to be completed by all St John’s Hospice volunteers
💚 On-going training as required
