On Sunday 7th May, over 1,400 people gathered in Kendal to take part in St John’s Hospice’s 3rd annual Kendal Colour Dash, raising over £30,000 for St John’s, whose Hospice at Home team care for patients all over the South Lakes.
The sun shone brightly for the record turn out as participants, both young and old, walked or ran 5km whilst being showered in coloured powder. The event started at Kirkbie Kendal school and as the purple powder cannons blasted off to signal the start, all 1,400 people set off around the school field before heading onto the old canal path. They made their way around Kendal Castle, through Fletcher Park and back to the school.
The event, sponsored by local company Kendal Nutricare, has never seen so many people sign up. Catherine Butterworth, Head of Fundraising at St John’s, was overwhelmed by the community’s support for the event, “our Kendal Colour Dash is in its 3rd year and it keeps growing and growing. To have as many as 1,400 people sign up is a great testament to the appreciation of the work that our nurses do in the South Lakes, as far north as Grasmere. We can’t thank the community enough for their amazing support. What a fabulous day; we couldn’t do it without the help of our fantastic volunteers and local corporate sponsors.”
One of the “dashers” was Assistant Practitioner Sandra Benson, part of the St John’s Hospice at Home team in the South Lakes, she said, “a lot of my time for St John’s is spent in the South Lakes so I really wanted to get involved in this event. I live in Kendal so I love being part of this community. It was really humbling to see so many people turn out for St John’s and to hear them talk about how much the hospice means to them. It was a fantastic atmosphere and it was so much fun.”
If you think this event sounds like fun and would like to take part in the future, the Kendal Colour Dash will return next year! If you can’t wait that long, why not sign up to the hospice’s Morecambe JWK Colour Dash on September 17th. Visit www.sjhospice.org.uk/jwkcolourdash for information.
