→The Big Bay Dip
January 1, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm GMT£2.50
An icy dip is absolutely brilliant for your skin and has many other benefits, so says a national newspaper article, though whether folk taking part in Morecambe Sailing Club’s New Year dip in Morecambe Bay will agree is another question!
With a big lunch time tide of 10m on New Year’s Day (1 January 2017) one thing is certain when swimmers and dippers take to the water from Morecambe Prom near the Town Hall is that they will have a chilly welcome with sea temperatures around the 10-12 degrees Centigrade mark.
One thing they will have to remember is that the dip is helping two leading charities, St John’s Hospice and RNLI Morecambe as well as Morecambe Sailing Club – profits from dip registrations being shared equally between the three.
The dip is open to all, subject to a £2.50 registration fee and a few simple questions about fitness to take part. Apart from the dip itself, this covers use of the clubhouse changing and shower facilities as well as facilities for storage of bags during the event. Registration starts at 12.00 noon.
Organised by Morecambe Sailing Club, the event caters for those who just want a chilly dip and a quick exit back to the clubhouse or a more serious cold water swim along a short course set out by the club. In both cases safety precautions will be in place both on shore and on the water.
Back at the clubhouse there will be hot drinks, soup and mulled wine and, for those seeking something a little stronger, the clubhouse bar will be open.
Organiser, Tyrone Lewis said: “The Club held a New Year dip three years ago for members and a few friends which was a big success and enjoyed by everyone who took part. The tide is a major factor in holding a New Year Big Bay Dip, and this year the timing and height are near perfect for the event. What has helped us that last week we had some big tides similar to New Year enabling us to check the best spots for the swim. Whether you fancy a quick dip or a more serious swim, this is very much a fun event with fancy dress welcomed and a prize for the best outfit. Spectators are more than welcome to cheer on dippers from the shore as well as back at the clubhouse.”
