When a GP in Milnthorpe, Mike’s practice looked after St John of God nursing home in Silverdale. In the early 1970s, Mike was asked to admit a patient with advanced cancer for whom no further treatment was possible. This began the work which is now continued by St John’s Hospice.
Mike was medical officer for 9 years after the new building opened, and has been a trustee ever since, also serving as Chairman from 2001 to 2009. He has also chaired the Northwest Hospice Group and the National Organisation for hospice chairmen. Mike now chairs St John’s Marketing & Fundraising Sub-Committee, and still serves on some national advisory bodies.
