What is Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is the swelling of the limbs and body, due to accumulation of lymphatic fluids caused by a damaged lymphatic drainage system. It can be a very distressing and limiting condition which can lead to hardening of the affected tissue and can increase the risk of infection.

Lymphoedema Service at St. John's Hospice
We run a busy Lymphoedema Service from St John's Hospice with clinics held at the Hospice for patients who are suffering from lymphoedema as a result of their cancer. CancerCare, in Kendal, hosts clinics for patients further north in the South Lakes area.

A qualified Lymphoedema Physiotherapist runs the clinics giving advice on skin care and gentle active exercises to patients, and supplying them with compression garments as necessary to allow them to control the condition.

Patients can access the service via referrals from their Consultant, their GP or a Macmillan Nurse.

Three times a year we run informal Lymphoedema Support Groups both at at the Hospice in Lancaster and at CancerCare's Lakes Centre in Kendal. These follow a varied programme providing companionship, support and the latest information to patients.

Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN)

The LSN is a national advice and lobbying organisation, keen to promote the needs and concerns of those living with the condition. Membership of the organisation (£10 pa.) gives you a wide range of support and information on Lymphoedema.
