Medical Student Teaching

We Continue to have fourth year Liverpool University medical students from Lancaster Infirmary for a month placement in palliative medicine. This year we will be having the students in three blocks of twelve in September, November, December and March 2010. There is the same provision in Barrow - based at Furness General Hospital.

During their time with us we aim to provide a basic understanding of all aspects of symptom control (physical, spiritual, psychological and social).
This is complemented by an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary team not only here in the hospice but also in hospital and the community.

During their month there is also emphasis and training in ethical issues culminating in an afternoon of presentations with our colleagues in Barrow.

Liverpool University (and ourselves) have always placed great importance on communication skills training and this forms an integral part of the whole undergraduate programme. The fourth- year training involves a 3 day-course provided by members of the multi-disciplinary team during this attachment.

The consistently favourable and complementary evaluations from students reflect the hard work, enthusiasm and professional commitment of all members of the clinical multi-disciplinary team, the administration and ancillary teams without whom these programmes could not be delivered.

We look forward to the coming year and welcome our future colleagues.
